A Cultural Approach to recovery
Wellbriety
Wellbriety is a sustainable grassroots movement that offers culturally based healing programs. One of its offerings is a powerful addiction-recovery program rooted in traditional 12-Step principles.
What is Wellbriety?
- Wellness—a sense of empowered wellbeing that encompasses body, mind, and spirit; along with a healthy relationship with one’s cultural roots.
- Wheel—the Indigenous Medicine Wheel that is at the heart of and provides a template for Wellbriety healing modalities.
- Sobriety—lasting and stable recovery from addiction’s physiological and psychological components. This includes healthy habits and self-care rituals that nourish and support a new way of living.
Wellbriety for substance abuse treatment
According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 10% of Native Americans have a substance use disorder. In addition, 4% of Native Americans have an illicit drug use disorder. While 7.1% of Native Americans have an alcohol use disorder.
Indigenous people face unique challenges in recovering from an alcohol or drug addiction. These challenges are often related to their specific cultural context. But this same cultural heritage offers abundant resources rooted in the wisdom and beauty of its spiritual traditions. One such resource is the Medicine Wheel.
In Wellbriety, the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel is integrated with traditional 12-Step Program principles. This is done to provide a culturally appropriate 12-Step Program for Indigenous people.
The original Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step Program is used as a model for Wellbriety’s substance abuse treatment. But the original program is adopted in a way that incorporates the Native American wisdom of the Medicine Wheel.

The medicine wheel & 12 Step Programs
The Indigenous Medicine Wheel (aka the Sacred Hoop) is an ancient visual symbol and tool. This tool is used for transmitting essential spiritual insights and wisdom regarding the healthy functioning of humans within the natural world. These insights and wisdom are transferred from generation to generation.
Many Native American communities use a Medicine Wheel, though the colors and symbols vary depending on the tribe/culture. While the symbols may vary, the purpose is similar across Native American cultures.
With its shapes and colors, the Medicine Wheel depicts the Four Directions. As well as Mother Earth, Father Sky, and Spirit Tree. All of which symbolize various dimensions of health and the cycles of life that all beings share.
When skillfully applied to one’s life, the Medicine Wheel teachings have the power to initiate significant positive transformations. These transformations can occur in attitude, behavior, values, and aspirations.

Begin your healing journey today
Like any journey, the path of healing begins with the first step. In this case, the first step is acknowledging the need for guidance and support and gratefully accept it.
The Akasha Recovery Center offers personalized treatment for each client on their unique path of recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.
Akasha is a small, intimate drug residential rehab, drug detox, and inpatient addiction treatment center. Its holistic therapies encompass recovery’s mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions.
Akasha = Infinite Space
The center takes its name from the Sanskrit word Akasha—which means infinite space. In Hindu spiritual traditions, Akasha is the first element created and the basis and essence of all things in the material world.
Akasha is the eternal, all-pervading physical substance, imperceptible but the basis for all else. One could say that Akasha is the “mother” of all things. Akasha also gives rise to the four elements: air, fire, water, and earth.
Encinitas Treatment Center
The healing power of the elements is on full display at the Akasha treatment Center. Our center is located on the beach near beautiful Encinitas, California. Here, the beauty and power of the natural world offer essential support to the healing process.
Akasha’s drug and alcohol detox and addiction rehab programs evaluate and stabilize each client. It is also intended to provide the foundation needed to support their ongoing recovery process.
The skilled therapists and medical experts at Akasha Recovery create a tailor-made plan for each client’s recovery. Highly trained and compassionate counselors take time to get to know each individual. They endeavor to fully understand their physical, psychological, and cultural situation.
This comprehensive, respectful, and in-depth intake process creates a customized recovery plan. We base our recovery plans on the specific conditions and struggles that a person is going through.
